Here's Johnny!

If you have ever seen the movie the Shining with Jack Nicholson, this is the outside of the hotel they were living in. In the movie it was called the Overlook. In real life, it's the Timberline Lodge.
We were here last week. It is half way up Mt. Hood in Oregon, at about 6,000 feet. In July, people are still skiing here, chairlift and all. Everyone else, such as Birdman and I, were in shorts and t shirts and sandals because it was summer! Very, very weird.

This is the view from the back side of the hotel looking toward the peak.

There were 8 of us in our party. (And a party it was!) Living together for a week with my sister-in-law and her husband. They were the most gracious hosts there could be. One of the days we ventured up to Mt. Hood. Everyone, but Birdman and I, went for a hike up the mountain in the snow. They had sneakers. I had sandals. My sandals were not meant for snow. So we sat on a lovely stone veranda in the sun and sipped Martinis instead, watching the skiiers lug their gear to the chair lifts.

Ahhhh, winter sports!

This is perfection as I sit sweltering in my attic office. Thank you for the blessed suggestion of snow on this blistering hot day.

What a great vacation - snow and yet still warm enough for shorts.

The only time I've been on the veranda, we witnessed from the edge to the left a lovely wedding ceremony. It was about the same time of year, but there was little snow that year. I think it was 2005. I don't get up into the mountains because driving on that sort of road scares me, and my sons for most of the years that I've lived in Portland have had to work weekends, when I'm off work. I do enjoy seeing Mt. Hood from afar, though.

This looks like such a fun time! Reminds me of husband and myself throwing snowballs at each other on Mount Wellinton in Tasmania while the rest of Australia sweltered in the December summer heat. Oregon seems like a wonderful place.

What a surprise to see snow in the midst of summer--and to see that you could be in shorts & sandals where others were skiing. Beautiful spot.

The veranda sounds much more appealing to me too!

Wow---looks like a fabulous vacation. I'd love to visit there sometime. I just today connected you and Birdman together. (Happy Birthday to him.)....

Both my hubby and I blog --so it takes people some time to connect us also...

Have a great weekend.
Hugs,
Betsy

Hmmm . . . . sipping drinks while some of us were trekking across a glacier on the Fourth of July (not to mention that one in the party fell into a bottomless hole and needed to be yanked out!). Well, we did get to join you on that patio to also partake in a cold beverage. Nice memories . . .
