My, how time flies....

April 29th....2010......that was the last time I posted on this blog. Today it's May 13th. I think that's the longest I've ever gone between posts.

I need to get a life.

I don't have anything to write about that would not bore the eyeballs out of you after reading the second sentence. The most eventful thing recently has been that I have to wear gloves this week while driving to work, not because it's part of my ensemble or anything, but because the month of May didn't get the memo.

Actually, all of the above is not exactly true. I did go to Florida for a long weekend, BUT I just got a new camera and Florida undoubtedly is camera worthy. But, apparently you have to read the directions when you get a new camera so that you can take photos once in a while.

Mr. DEDS: "Where's your new camera?" he asks, after listening to me complain about the fact that I can't turn on my old camera anymore. (I have to use the tip of a ball point pen positioned in just the right place and exert 500 m.p.s.i. to MAYBE turn it on. )

"It's in the box", I reply.

"Well, get the box." my astute husband requests.

So I get the box, take everything out, put it on the table in front of him and walk away.

Pretty pathetic, since I'm the one in the family that actually CAN read directions AND follow them without too many four letter words.

Mr. DEDS calmy inserts the battery and proceeds to charge the camera.
In no time at all, it is charged and apparently ready to shoot.

I shove all the assorted wires, parts and pamphlets into a ziplock bag and cram them into my backpack to take on the plane. (Next to my miniscule bottle of hand sanitizer lovingly placed into a required quart sized ziplock bag so the authorities could scrutinize it via an xray machine.)

In Florida, it's hit or miss as to whether I can figure out where to turn the knobs to to take a photo, but I can turn it ON. So I take some pictures, I think.

After about 3 1/2 photos I get an important message. NO MORE MEMORY.

No amount of Ginkgo Biloba will help this thing, so I hand it over the Mr. DEDS and tell him there's no more memory. I toss him the ziplock bag with the assorted paraphernalia in it and walk away.

Somewhere he found a larger memory card than was originally in the camera and stuck it in.

All set.

It was still 50/50 as to whether I could figure out what buttons to turn to actually take a photo.
So I took some. I think.

When, and if he helps me figure out which wire to use to put the photos onto my laptop, I will finally be able to enter a post that might be somewhat amusing. And maybe if I even bothered to look at the wires, I could figure it out myself....

Nah.

My mom's theory was - if at first you don't succeed - you might try the instructions. And I live by that theory. I want things to be intuitive and work because I expect them to. A while back I needed to make buttonholes with my new sewing machine - easy, right. WRONG. I had to read four pages of the manual and practice several times before I got a recongnizable buttonhole - and the machine has several buttonhole stitches to choose from. Once I got them made I put the manual away and will have to get it out again to make buttonholes (if I ever want to again) because it has been so long since I made the first ones. I want my old singer back that just whirred along and made the buttonholes with one touch.

Can't wait to see the photos you took. And I've missed you, glad you are back.

Arghh, E! At least you have that long legged Mr. DEDS to leave in charge of the figuring out. I suspect in a few weeks you will no longer be walking away from this new camera. Either that or Mr. Longlegs will be walking away with it and leaving you with HIS old camera. BTW: the ginko biloba line made me lol.

And the moral of the story is: Never take a new camera on vacation unless you have to? What a funny story! I'm with you on learning new cameras: not FUN at all! Can't wait to see what you shot for us!

Technology needs to be less complicated!

I am so challenged when it comes to these matters. When I got my first VCR, I felt like I should have gone to college so I would know how to porgram it to record TV shows. Then it was the computer, the DVD player. Then there was the cell phone. I remember asking my 17 year old niece, "How do I shut this off?" It dosen't get any easier...you should have seen the chaos when I got my new digital camera. Not a pretty sight.

Hugs, Kathleen

You are just such a funny lady, I'm glad you're back and I don't mind if you don't have pictures either, for now. ~Lili

Ginkgo bilwhatta? Just to clear this up... the memory card that I found was in the camera box... you were using your camera with NO memory card. No wonder 3 1/2 pictures! hahaha

Funny post---but not too funny to you I'll bet. I hate to read directions also--especially when they are 1000000000 pages... Thank Goodness that my hubby likes to read all of that stuff. He reads and teaches me. That's the only way I could ever have learned to work my new camera. Hope you learned yours and got some Florida pictures...
Hugs,
Betsy

I am one of those women that can figure things out only after I have written the directions down on paper and done them at least 50 or more times! Then, there is still a chance of my forgetting how to do it if I haven't done it in a while!! My husband is a technology guy. He's my gadget guru and he's good at it. I do exactly what you described...hand it all to him and walk away! God I never realized that before until I read about you doing it! Arggg@! One time I was taking photos outside with my new camera after a rain. I started taking closeups of drops of rain on a pine bow. I used every setting on the camera and took photos. Two turned out to be quite good...actually pretty amazing. The problem?....I had no clue which setting caused that and still don't!
