Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.........

I can’t cook a turkey. Well, what I mean is, I don’t like cooking a turkey.

I try very hard to end up at someone’s house for Thanksgiving.

Trouble is, when we get back, the very next weekend, Mr. Downeastdoingstuff suggests we cook a turkey so that we have his favorite thing.....leftovers! He gets bummed out when we don’t have left over turkey for turkey sandwiches because we’ve managed to go to someone elses house for Thanksgiving.

So guess who cooks a turkey the next weekend so that Mr. Downeastdoingstuff is happy? I like Mr. Downeastdoingstuff when he’s happy.

BUT.....To me, handling a turkey is like fondling a corpse. It’s too dang big to be food. (see above photo) (Right?)

I know, I know.....I eat beef and cows are, in fact, much bigger than turkeys. But I don’t put a cow’s lifeless, cold carcass, sans fur, into my sink. And then stick my hand into it’s innards to pull out more innards. How disgusting would that be?

Well, a turkey is the same. Whole chickens I can handle, barely, but I can.  A hamburger is no problem. Even hotdogs don’t gross me out. And they probably should......

So we’re going to my cousin’s for turkey. Driving over 350 miles so that I don’t have to touch someone’s dead skin. It’ll be worth it.

But who am I kidding? You know what I’ll be doing next weekend. Sigh.

Unless.........someone invites us over to their house to eat next weekend.

Right, Donna?

  1. How I can relate! I actually threw a boneless turkey breast in the crockpot yesterday for hubby (I don't even eat fowl and I'm having fish for Thanksgiving!) gobble gobble---have a good one!

  2. Well, Elenka, you'd be more than welcomed at my house, the only thing is . . . I won't be home! How about the following weekend? (I'd suggest bringing some Tupperware to your hostess's home for Thanksgiving leftovers!).

  4. Ha! I know that feeling only too well, but you have to be careful about invitations. We were once invited to a potluck Thanksgiving. We asked what we could bring and the host said "the cooked turkey."

  6. Oh how I wish we had a pre-Christmas celebration like you do with Thanksgiving... Perhaps I should make one up of our own... that turkey is a real whopper! I could just about get it into my oven but I would have no room for the roast potatoes...

  8. Hi Elenka,
Thanks for stopping by my blog. That is a neat idea for the window. The art room is in my house though. LOL. Maybe displays some of my art in the panes!
I think 7th graders would love doing the dominos. I am going to post a how to sometime this week while I am on vacation.
    Have a happy Thanksgiving.
    Hugs from Texas. Tara

  9. When you think about it, every single minute of every day on this predatory planet, something somewhere is eating something else.I think the thought has just hit the turkey squre between those big brown eyes.(Hate to say it but that turkey looks like my Great Aunt Joan without her lippy on - they say I resembled her when I was little, so that now she is in her late 80's I don't like where this is heading).

  11. You're driving 350 miles for Thanksgiving dinner?!! I suspect your going to get more than turkey out of the journey.

  14. Awww... the look on the poor turkey's face.....

I don't really like dealing with cold dead birds either...but, I find a small chicken with an empty cavity works the best for me. Plus... tastier and moist.
Easy to handle... hardly touch it really... quick stuff of lemons, garlic and onion while holding the end of one leg with a paper towel... .... or make a bread stuffing... get somebody to hold it up while I put in the stuffing.... lol...

I hope you get a chance to do the parsnips some day..they were pretty tasty alright....

  15. if only the dead chicken and turkey bodies didn't look so much like their alive bodies, it would be a little easier. I tried to get invited, but instead the Husband and I will be having dinner right at home. Hope you have a great holiday! Hugs, Kathleen

  16. you're welcome! if you right click on the awards and click on "save image as" and save it somewhere on your computer.

then you can just post the images to your sidebar like you did your paintings.

hope the bird turned out well! my roomate cooked one for the first time this year, and she shared the same sentiment as you did; that it was like cooking a dead child it was so big!

  18. You had me laughing pretty good! I have issues with handling chickens and turkeys, too.

....You had to show the last picture to make it all the more real that we're eating real birds, huh?? ;)
